St Helena Hospice

Who are they:

St Helena Hospice helps patients, families and carers around North East Sussex deal with incurable illness, helping patients live well and die with dignity and choice.

Along with the work done in the community, the hospice has a wide range of facilities, including an inpatient unit, therapy and wellness centers and also run the St Helena Hospice and NHS North East Essex bereavement services. More than two thirds of the £8.7 million a year it costs to run the hospice is raised through the support of the local community, which allows their services to be free for people who need it.

The Challenges

With the reduction of grant funding, St Helena Hospice have a 5-year plan to reposition themselves to make the organisation self-sustainable through multiple revenue streams and moving away from the 80/20 funding split.  The senior leadership team is keen to explore new ways for cost control, leading the hospice sector on best practice procurement and cost transformation.

"We need to find new way to scale up, starting to look at everything fresh and fundamentally changing our strategy” Mark Jarmen-Howe, Chief Executive

The Strategy

Novo-K met with St Helena Hospice and carried out a SMARTcheck interview, looking at the existing procurement strategy focusing on IT issues. Based on our SMARTprocurement model - Strategy, Measure, Approach, Relationships and Transformation, our report provides an overview and recommendations, together with identifying immediate areas of opportunity and concern.

The Results

The result was a full report for the Hospice breaking down their current strategy and giving recommendations moving forward in order to meet their 5-year plan.

“Novo-K completed a SMARTcheck review for St Helena Hospice of our current procurement approach and buying habits. The process combined guided self-assessment, a review of our spend data and a really useful site visit where the Novo-K team met with key people in the charity. The SMARTreport that they produced was very clear, relevant and well-structured using their easily understandable SMARTprocurement model. The whole process encouraged us to reflect on our current arrangements and priorities, and prompted us to really focus on opportunities and quick-wins that we’d been missing. The recommendations were all practical and achievable, and we appreciated the way these were RAG rated to make developing an action plan that much easier. All in all the support we received was excellent value for money and will undoubtedly help us realise a decent return on this modest investment" Mark Jarman-Howe, Chief Executive
