St Helena Hospice

St Helena Hospice

About the organisation:

St Helena Hospice helps patients, families and carers around North East Sussex deal with incurable illness, helping patients live well and die with dignity and choice.

The hospice has a wide range of facilities, including an inpatient unit, therapy and wellness centres. They also run the St Helena Hospice and NHS North East Essex bereavement services.

More than two thirds of the £8.7 million a year it costs to run the hospice is raised through the support of the local community, which allows their services to be free for people who need it.

What help did they require?

St Helena Hospice approached Novo-K as they already had a 5-year plan to reposition themselves to make the organisation self-sustainable through multiple revenue streams and moving away from the 80/20 funding split, but needed some support.

The senior leadership team is keen to explore new ways for cost control, leading the hospice sector on best practice procurement and cost transformation.

How did you do it?

Novo-K met with St Helena Hospice, carrying out a SMARTdiscovery interview, looking at the existing procurement strategy focusing on IT issues.

Based on our SMARTprocurement model – Strategy, Measure, Approach, Relationships and Transformation, our report provides an overview and recommendations, together with identifying immediate areas of opportunity and concern.

How did you do it?

The result was a full report for the Hospice breaking down their current strategy and giving recommendations moving forward in order to meet their 5-year plan.

The whole process encouraged us to reflect on our current arrangements and priorities, and prompted us to really focus on opportunities and quick-wins that we’d been missing. The recommendations were all practical and achievable, and we appreciated the way these were RAG rated to make developing an action plan that much easier. All in all the support we received was excellent value for money and will undoubtedly help us realise a decent return on this modest investment”
